Here at Ashley Lynn Photography, we are all about making family photography sessions as low stress as possible! This is the main reason I started collecting my favorite clothing items for moms and kiddos in my Client Wardrobe Collection, along with providing hair and makeup services for moms.
Whether you’re planning an outdoor session or studio session, coming to the photoshoot prepared can make a significant difference in how smoothly your photo session runs. I created this guide to help you pack for the day, ensuring you have everything you need for a successful family photo session. Keep reading to learn all my best tips!

Family Photography Session in Dayton, Ohio
1. What to Wear: This point can be broken down into two sub-categories, clothes and accessories. Let’s kick it off with clothes! If you’re taking advantage of our Client Wardrobe for mom and kids then, you’re covered there. Just remember to bring along dad’s outfit! Check out my tips on What to wear for Men- Family Photography edition.
Ladies, make sure you wear nude colored undergarments so you they can’t be seen through your outfit. Since some sessions take place in the evenings close to bedtime, it’s great to bring along some PJs for the kids to change into before getting in the car to go home. Trust me on this one, it’s a small detail that makes all the difference.
Now for accessories. When picking accessories for the session, pick timeless jewelry that is delicate and not too overpowering. I want you to be the star of the shoot, not your jewelry! On that same note, make sure your nails are clean and painted a light neutral color or left unpolished. Think light pink, french tipped or natural.
2. Props: Personal items such as a favorite family book, toy or blanket can add a unique and intimate touch to your photos. These items help tell your family’s story and make the session more engaging, especially for children.
3. Snacks and Water: Having snacks on hand can be a lifesaver, especially if you have young children. Choose non-messy, easy-to-eat snacks that can keep hunger at bay without risking stains on outfits. But just to be safe, I recommend leaving the snack in the bag until it’s absolutely necessary.
Bring enough water for the whole family to ensure everyone stays comfortable throughout the session. Keeping everyone hydrated, especially if you’re session is outdoors in the summer.

How to Prepare for a Photo Session
4. Comfort Items: This is another category that can be broken down into two main groups. First, comfortable shoes. While you might choose to wear a pair of new stylish shoes for the photos, bringing along comfortable shoes for walking between locations is a must. This is also a good idea if the ground is wet or muddy too.
Next, an item to keep you warm. If you are going out in chilly weather then bringing along a coat or blanket is a must to keep warm, happy little ones with no tears.
5. Entertainment for Kids: To keep children engaged and cooperative during the session, bring along their favorite small toys or books. These can also be used as tools to help bring out natural smiles and expressions.
6. Miscellaneous Essentials: Now I have a few of my miscellaneous essentials! First up, tissues and wipes. Handy for cleaning faces, hands or any unexpected messes.
Next, a stroller! If you have babies or toddlers it’s a great idea to bring a stroller along. This will save your arms and keep your wardrobe clean and wrinkle free in between locations. It’s also great to haul any extra items you have. Strollers are also great to have around when you want a solo shot of just mom and dad – it’s the perfect safe space to let your little one rest.
7. Positive Attitude: Last, but certainly not least, everyone needs to bring along a positive attitude. We all know family photography sessions can be stressful. This is tough because the biggest contributors to beautiful photographs are happy parents and kiddos. Yes, it’s likely your kid may have a fit at some point during the session. But if the parents have a smile on their face and keep things light, kids are much faster to get back on track for happy photos!
