5 Photoworthy Christmas Moments

I know, I know. Christmas, already?? While it’s true it may feel like the leaves have just started changing, the holiday season is definitely creeping up! With Christmas just a few months away, it’s safe to start getting excited about all of the colors, festivities, and above all else, the photo opportunities. I’m going to say it’s safe to assume that most people reading this blog love the holidays and spending time with their family. If this sounds like you, I have compiled 5 photoworthy Christmas moments that you must capture and preserve!

You don’t need a fancy camera to capture your special family moments. I’m a professional photographer and even I capture a lot of these moments on my phone camera! Please don’t let the quality discourage you. In my opinion, it’s better to have a fuzzy and not perfectly lit photo to remember the moment than no photo at all.

Christmas Family Photos Ideas from Ashley Lynn Photography

1. What’s Christmas without cookies?

If you have a little one who loves cookies, dress them up in a cute outfit (bonus points if you include a holiday apron) and make some cookies together! Snap a few photos of your kids helping add the chocolate chips or mixing the dough. You can also set up a self-timer or trade with your spouse to get some candid shots of you each helping the kids. And don’t worry if the clothes get messy! The messy clothes just add to the charm (and realism) of the photoshoot.

2. Trim the tree!

Decorating the Christmas tree is one of the most beloved holiday traditions. This year, take the opportunity to turn on some Christmas music and take a few candid photos of your kids hanging their favorite ornaments on the tree. Once the tree is decorated, turn out the room lights and leave just the tree lights on. Have your kids sit with their arms wrapped around each other and looking at the top of the tree. Then take a photo of them from behind with their backs towards you. This will be a great photo of the beautiful lights and their silhouettes looking up at the tree.

3. Santa’s sleepy helper

If your child is still little, you can capture so many cute shots of them while they sleep. Put them in some Christmas themed pajamas and capture them fast asleep. Maybe put their favorite Christmas book next to them. My kid’s sleeping photos are always some of my favorites to capture!

4. Friends & family visits

This is always one photo opt I’m terrible about remembering to get. When you’re visiting friends and family this holiday season, grab a group of your loved ones and take some photos together. This can be a quick photo of everyone sitting around the table, or better yet, call everyone to gather around the tree. You may get some groans for this one, especially among the older crew, but you won’t regret it. You just never know when this might be your last Christmas all together.

5. Christmas morning

Even in the chaos of Christmas day, I always try to get a few shots of my kids in front of the tree on Christmas morning. I also try to get the pets in the mix too. My pro tip for this photo-op is to wait until all the gifts are unwrapped before snapping the photo. Your kids might be too distracted otherwise!
