In-Studio Family Photography Session

You may have never considered an indoor studio location for your photo session, but for your next winter family photography session you may want to keep it top of mind! Especially if you’re looking to capture a few new family photos before the year comes to a close or during the cold midwest winter. Finding a way to get those family photos taken without having to face the bitter cold Dayton, Ohio winters can be tricky.

Still not convinced of having an in-studio family photo session?

I know when some people think of studio photography sessions, the first things that come to mind are something akin to a Walmart or JCPenny’s portrait sessions which can lean a bit cheesy. And trust me, I can say this because I actually worked at Walmart Portrait studios right after I graduated photography school! But I’m here to tell you that studio sessions can actually be timeless and lovely if you get the right photographer who’s style aligns with yours.

Winter Family Photography Session

It’s no secret at this point that I really do love a studio setting for a winter family photoshoot. And today, I have some facts to back me up! Here’s why a studio is a great setting for your upcoming family photography shoot:

1. No need to reschedule: When you select an outdoor location, you need to be okay with the fact that the weather might change for the worse. Many photographers only reschedule for heavy rain, meaning you may have to face less than ideal weather conditions like wind, snow on the ground or in the warmer months, summer heat and high humidity. When you schedule an indoor studio session, there’s no need to worry about rescheduling due to weather.

2. Warmer, comfortable conditions: Not everyone loves being out in the cold, especially little one’s who don’t exactly understand why they are being told to stand still and smile for a camera. This can cause a family photo session to quickly become unpleasant while shooting outdoors during half the year in Ohio. With a temperature-controlled studio session, everyone is warm, comfortable and most importantly, happy. The result is of this is more time to experiment and more overall photos. Not to mention, cold weather can also change skin colors, cause water eyes and rosy cheeks and noses, which photographers can’t always edit out.

3. It’s a contained environment: Shooting at an outdoor location can make it much harder to contain your children and your pets to a select area. This isn’t the case with a studio family photo session! When you shoot in a studio, you get to capture more photos because your kids can’t go very far. And since the kids only have a select area to explore, it can be easier to capture those candid photos we all love. What’s more, most studios have a few distractions available such as toys for children, allowing parents and older siblings to capture photos of their own while the younger children happily play in the space.

4. Flexible time options: When you shoot outside, you need to play along with the light. I find that shooting an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset is ideal to avoid the harsh sunlight of midday. And this time frame shrinks even more in the winter! When you work in a studio, there is a wider window for shooting times. Even as a family photographer who shoots using mainly natural lighting, I can shoot in a studio with lots of windows during most of the daylight hours.

Overall, the benefits of during your winter family photography session really speak for themselves! You have more options available to you in terms of the time of your session, you don’t need to worry about weather and you may end up with even more photos.

Family Photography Studio Session in Dayton, Ohio

In the winter, families generally have fewer commitments and social engagements – take advantage of this! Schedule your indoor family session now instead of waiting for those warmer summer months.

For these studio sessions, I almost always shoot at Salon Noir outside of Dayton, Ohio. They offer a gorgeous studio space that you’ll see in the background of many of my photos. If you like the clean, light and airy look, I highly recommend booking your family session with me. I’ll make sure to have that aesthetic carry through to your final photos.
