Today’s featured family photo session comes from a donation for the Pave it Forward event for the Mummert Family. Their son, Finn, was born needing on-going care. This event helped raise funds to support them. Kathy won the session!

One of the things I love most about the Dayton area is how connected everyone is. We battled a lot as a community last year, and the only thing that really got us through it all was coming together.

Dayton (and the surrounding areas) has the community at its core. Giving back, supporting and empowering the community happens all around us, every day. Today’s featured family session was made possible by philanthropy and community support.

Family Photo Session at James Ranch

I captured Kathy and her son (also named Finn)’s family photo session at the James Ranch in Xenia. The session took place in the fall, and our location couldn’t have been more scenic. Crisp leaves, warm tones and stylish layers make Fall one of my favorite seasons to photograph family sessions in.

This particular family photo session was a sweet mother and son photoshoot, which I’m totally partial to now that I have a little boy.

Finn reminded me a lot of my son Elliot. Full of energy, and super funny little guy. During the session, I encouraged Finn to play with leaves and stomp around. Once comfortable with the idea of playing during a session, kids tend to feel more relaxed. That’s where the magic really happens!

As a family photographer (and mom,) I’m used to handling kids who don’t want to sit still during a session. Especially when we’re outdoors. I like to let them run around a bit if it helps. Plus, it often shows off their personality more authentically, which makes for some great shots.
